In Progress

Gilmore Manor

Inspiration / Photos

I took my own photos but ended up using those provided by the owner because they were so much better.  They included hanging plants and were taken at an angle that accentuated the porch which is a beautiful feature of the house.

Sketches

The sketch went through several stages, making adjustments to the shrubs that in reality are so large that they hide the important architectural details.

Tracing

Using a light table, I transferred the drawing onto the watercolor paper and tape the edges to keep them clean.

I use Arches 300lb paper.  It's the best.  It's so thick it doesn't warp no matter how much paint I apply.

Washes

Every painting starts by laying down the largest washes.  Here I completed the sky, background landscape and roof so far.

And if you look REAL CLOSE, you can see I added Camper the dog.  He is the therapy dog and obviously brings joy to the residents just by being his adorable self.

Starting the Details

Once my initial washes are done and dry, I like to choose an area and begin with the details. I use Micron Waterproof Pens for my outlines.

Details

Lots of work done today on my day off.  First layer of the stones laid down; still need to darken them to match the photo.

Lots of progress today.  Foundation, shrubs, gazebo.....

Final Illustration

Well, kind of.... I will probably do a few touch ups.
